Adult Driver Education and Training - San Diego area

If you're 18 years or older and have never driven before, you're not alone!  Lots of people like you are getting their licenses every year and American Driving School is here to help.

We specialize in teaching adults to drive. Whether it's your first time behind the wheel or you are adapting to driving in California after moving here from a different driving environment, we have the experience you need. Our calm, professional instructors will comfortably take you through our step-by-step process and help you to become a safe, confident, fully licensed driver.  We provide the car, the fuel, and the patience to get you off to a good start.

THE WRITTEN TEST

Your first step is to take a written test about California laws and signs at a DMV location. To help you prepare, pick up a California Driver Handbook at any DMV office or view it online at http://apps.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/dl600.pdf. Once at the DMV, your vision will also be tested and you must prove your identity before a photo is taken.  When you pass the written test, you receive an Instructional Permit, allowing you to practice with an Instructor or other licensed adult driver.

DRIVING INSTRUCTION

We have developed a complete curriculum for behind-the-wheel instruction. Our Instructors evaluate your abilities and learning speed to provide you with an estimate of the time it may take for you to obtain your California Driver's License. The Instructor will then set up a lesson plan to develop your driving skills, or split between professional instruction and practice driving with another licensed adult driver. When you're ready, we will give you a simulated driving test so you can prepare and feel confident of passing the actual DMV Driving Test.

THE DRIVE TEST

DMV requires new adult drivers to take a behind-the-wheel driving test. This test is available by appointment only, either by phoning DMV or booking online at www.dmv.ca.gov. While driving lessons with a professional instructor are not specifically required, for the best results we recommend at least a professional evaluation and a practice driving test before going to DMV for the real thing. The DMV Examiners are heavily booked and cannot be treated as if they are driving instructors, with new adult drivers taking the driving test just to see what they still need to learn.
